Projects of VIS Development Program

Projects of VIS Development Program in 2009 - 2010

Wireless Internal and External Short Range Networks in Vehicles and Moving Machines Project: CWC, VTT, TOL, KAJAK, KAO
In the project, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and the University of Oulu, Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) and the Department of Information Processing (TOL), the University of Applied Science in Kajaani (KAJAK) and Kainuu Vocational College (KAO) research and define reliable wireless platforms that could be used in sensor systems used for automatic work cycles in moving machines. The project covers also the internal and external near field wireless communications systems that could be used for reliable and safe remote control of vehicles and moving machines.

Vehicle Technology Tester – Modular Education Program Planning Project: KAO
In the project, Kainuu Vocational College (KAO) plans and productizes 13 training modules providing professional expertises focused to testing of vehicles and machines. In addition to standard vocational adult education these modules can be used for advanced special studies of testing experts in companies: vehicle and machine manufacturers, re-seller networks, vehicle testing companies, etc.

Remote Real-time Monitoring of Fuel Consumption of Heavy Vehicles Project: KAJAK
In the project, the University of Applied Sciences in Kajaani (KAJAK) develops software and system to monitor fuel consumption and other drive parameters of heavy vehicles remotely in real-time.

Future Development Partnering Project: KAJAK, TOL, CWC ja VTT
In the project during 2009 and 2010, the University of Applied Science in Kajaani (KAJAK), Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and the University of Oulu, Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) and the Department of Information Processing (TOL) scan calls to extension and other associated VIS focused projects and programs funded by TEKES, EU, etc. external sources to prepare and offer cooperation in such projects and programs. In the project, the parties also execute marketing and other activities that will improve the international knowledge of the centre of expertise in VIS located in Kainuu and, that will ensure the continuation of VIS Development Program after 2010 to achieve its goals by 2015.

New Communications Buss Technologies Project: VTT
In the project, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) researches Ethernet -based and wireless communications busses to be used in harsh environments and pilot tests a selected wireless buss in a moving machine.

ATJ –Databank:  TOL, KAJAK, KAO In the project, the Department of Information Processing  (TOL) at the University of Oulu, the University of Applied  Sciences in Kajaani (KAJAK) and Kainuu Vocational College (KAO) plan and establish a VIS databank for the members and partners of the VIS Development Program.

Independent Limit Switch :  VTT, CWC, Sensinode In the project, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and the University of Oulu, Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) and Sensinode Ltd. research and pilot an independent  limit switch, which communicates wirelessly and harvests its energy from its environment  in heavy vehicles or moving machines.

Simulation and Analysing of vibration for Electronic Units : KAJAK In the project, the University of Applied  Sciences in Kajaani (KAJAK) implements and pilots thermal stress simulation and analysis for electrical units (printed circuit boards, PCBs) with NISA/FEAP-simulation program.

Projects of VIS Development Program in 2008

New Buss Technologies and Equipment Integration: VTT
In the project, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) studied eligible communications busses, which can be used in vehicles and moving machines (CAN, LIN, Flexray,…) in near future. The project included also the study of the components, accessories and equipment (from sensors to trailers) compatible to the busses, the capacity of the busses. VTT concluded the debriefing by a technology survey and forecast related to the eligible communications buss solutions and suggested which actions would be appropriate for VIS companies. In 2009, this debriefing will continue with New Communications Buss Technologies Project.

Automatic Work Cycles: VTT, CWC
In the project, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and the University of Oulu, Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) focused the study to the requirements, which VIS companies set to wireless environment in heavy vehicles and moving machines and prepared a project plan for Wireless Internal and External Short Range Networks in Vehicles and Moving Machines Project , which will be executed in 2009.

Practical Methods in Reliability Design: KAJAK, ALSafety Ltd.
In the project, the University of Applied Sciences in Kajaani (KAJAK) and AlSafety Ltd. planned a training program, which will cover the proofed, practical methods to be used in reliability design. The training is targeted to electronic, mechanical and SW –designers and project managers in VIS companies.

GPL / FSF in Commercial Products: KAJAK, Nomovok Ltd.
In the project, the University of Applied Sciences in Kajaani (KAJAK) and Novomok Ltd. surveyed the legal and other practical consequences of open source code when used in embedded computer programs developed for commercial use.

Establishing VIS Research Group: TOL
In the project, The University of Oulu, the Department of Information Processing (TOL) set foundation and base plans for their research and education activities in Kajaani focused to VIS.

Real-time Monitoring of Fuel Consumption of (Heavy) Vehicles: KAJAK
In the project, the University of Applied Sciences in Kajaani studied and piloted how the CAN-buss in a truck could be utilised for monitoring of the fuel consumption of a Volvo truck and transmitting the data to a computer system in the Internet in real-time. The study included also the interface specifications and industry standards that are applicable for the fuel monitoring. In 2009-2010, this pre-study will continue with Remote Real-time Monitoring of Fuel Consumption of Heavy Vehicles Project .
